Double Henge Bed

This double bed is made from reclaimed Brazilian mahogany. The wood supported the barn roof of a farm near Clitheroe; however this had been a show farm, built by McAlpine in the 1950s, and they had spared no expense in its construction. The mahogany has a beautiful smooth reddy-brown finish and polishes well. A number of people have commented that they don't have the space for the chunkier designs, in which case this could be the solution.

This bed is a double, measuring 4'6" x 6'3". The headboard stands 3' high and the cross-piece is 4'6"' long. The frame stands 15" high and the mattress can be fitted flush with the top or up to 3" into the body of the frame.

These beds are a new take on designer furniture: completely original, quirky and full of character. These beds aren't mass-produced with some designer's name slapped on them: each is individually designed and crafted by one man in a workshop. Absolutely unique - you will never hear the words "That's the same bed as ours"!  What is more, they have excellent ecological credentials:  apart from the slats of the beds - which are from sustainable sources - everything is reclaimed, sourced from the salvage yards and shorelines of the North West. So if you are looking for furniture that is both ethical and individual, you may well have found your site!

No trees were harmed in the making of these beds.

The timbers may well have been cut two centuries ago and have already had a long working life, such as supporting the roofs and floors of factories and homes, and they have been cleaned, cut, crafted and polished to bring out the distinctiveness of the wood, becoming objects of beauty and use. And in an environment where the carbon footprint of what we buy is becoming increasingly important, you can rest assured that the foremost energy source in the production of these beds is elbow grease!

All the beds are made to fit standard mattress sizes, eg. king size is 5' x 6'6", although the actual footprint of each bed is considerably larger due to the thickness of the timber encasing the mattress. (Mattress not included).
