Ethical beds are a new take on designer furniture: completely original, quirky and full of character. These beds aren't mass-produced with some designer's name slapped on them: each is individually designed and crafted by one man in a workshop. Everything is reclaimed, sourced from the salvage yards and shorelines of the North West of England.
All the beds are made to fit standard mattress sizes. Mattress is not included.
This is the Keel Bed, a Super-King Size with a matching blanket chest. The headboard and the lid of the chest began as the keel of a fishing boat, half-buried in the sand at Hightown near Crosby.
The frame and headboard could be reduced to king size if required at no extra cost. The legs are made from a single piece of timber, so the grain is continuous around the curve of the corner. The diamond shape on the lid is an original repair to the hull of the boat. Because the legs have ended up being quite slim, the mortise and tenon joints are secured with screws through the back of the leg.
Although it is made from the keel of a boat the shape of the headboard is reminiscent of a ship's sail and the side and end beams are tapered to give the bed a softer look.
The bed and chest are a unique and distinctive combination, full of character.
