Sigurd The Dragon Slayer Candlesticks
Hylestad stave church, Setesdal, Norway. 11th century.
In Viking legend, Sigurd was tricked by the sorcerer Regin into confronting the dragon Fafnir, so that he could steal the beast’s treasure. Regin forged a fine sword with which Sigurd killed the dragon, and as Regin slept, Sigurd roasted the heart of the beast. Testing the meat Sigurd burned his thumb, so he sucked it, and with that taste of dragon’s blood he suddenly understood the language of birds, who told him Regin planned to betray him. Using the sword Regin had made him, Sigurd lopped off Regin's head and took the treasure for himself.
